SEO cost in Australia, including AI SEO
How is SEO usually priced?
How much SEO costs depends first on how it is priced. SEO is priced in three main ways: a monthly retainer for ongoing work, an hourly rate, or a fixed price per project such as an audit or a site migration. In an Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers, 78.2% charged a monthly retainer, 48.9% charged per project and 34.8% charged by the hour. The figures add up to more than 100% because many providers offer more than one model.

A retainer suits ongoing content, local search and authority work. A project price suits work with a clear end point, such as fixing the technical problems found in an audit. Hourly pricing suits advice and small pieces of work. Ask which model a provider proposes and why it fits your site.
What is the typical SEO cost in Australia?
For SEO cost in Australia, Clutch's SEO pricing page lists US$100 to US$149 an hour as the typical rate for SEO agencies. The page is built from verified client reviews and was updated on 21 September 2026. Clutch reports that SEO projects reviewed on the platform typically cost under US$10,000, and that the average project cost US$37,158.66. These are US dollar figures from one platform's reviews, so use them as a rough guide to the market.

For retainers, the Ahrefs survey found that the most common monthly retainer was US$501 to US$1,000, charged by 20.4% of respondents, and that agencies charged an average of US$3,209 a month compared with US$1,348.63 for freelancers. The most common hourly rate in that survey was US$75 to US$100, and the average was US$111. The survey covers providers in several countries and does not report Australian figures separately.
What does AI SEO cost?
We could not find a published survey that prices AI SEO separately from SEO, so there is no sourced market range to quote. AI SEO can be priced as part of an SEO engagement or as a separate project, and it usually starts with an audit of how AI crawlers and assistants see your site. The cost depends on how much of the site needs to change, which the audit should tell you before you commit to further work.
What drives the cost of AI SEO work:
- Whether your pages are rendered on the server or only in the browser. Content that appears only after scripts run is harder for some crawlers to read, and changing how a site renders is a larger job than editing copy.
- How many page templates need structured data added or corrected.
- Whether your robots.txt file and hosting settings allow the crawlers used by AI assistants.
- How much page copy needs rewriting so that each page answers its question directly.
- Whether you want visibility tracked over time, which means asking a fixed set of questions on a schedule and recording the answers.
What drives the cost of SEO?
The main cost drivers are the competition for the searches you want to appear in, the size and technical condition of your site, the amount of content to be written or improved, whether you target one area or the whole country, and whether link building or digital PR is included. Who does the work matters too, because senior specialists charge more per hour than juniors, and some agencies outsource parts of the work.
A small local business with a sound site in a quiet market needs far less work than a national retailer with thousands of pages. A quote given before anyone has looked at your site is an estimate, and two agencies looking at the same site can propose different amounts of work.
How do I compare SEO quotes?
Give every agency the same brief and ask each to break its quote into tasks, deliverables and hours for each month. Check who will do the work, what reporting is included, whether content writing and link building are in the price, how long the minimum term is, and what happens to your accounts and content if you leave. Compare the work proposed as well as the fee, because a lower monthly price can mean less work.
Ask each agency what its audit found and what it would do first. The answers show whether it has looked at your site. The guide to choosing an SEO or AI SEO agency lists more questions to ask.
Is cheap SEO a risk?
A low price is a risk when it depends on shortcuts. Very cheap packages can rely on automated or paid links, which Google's spam policies treat as link spam, or on reports with little work behind them. Ask what tasks the fee covers each month and how links are earned, and get the answers in writing.
